At the day centre
Traditionally, volunteers have helped out in the kitchens, serving food, collecting and wiping and washing up, either at breakfast (8.00am - 10.00am) or lunch (11.30am - 1.00pm). At weekends the day centre runs a sandwich and hot drinks service. Volunteers are still needed for these essential roles. Saturday morning is covered by four teams of volunteers who each commit one Saturday morning in four. Sunday morning is run by five teams of volunteers who each commit one Sunday morning every five weeks. The Passage is also transforming and expanding its voluntary roles across the entire organisation.
We need people who have skills and experience in the following areas: art, drama and group-work skills, drivers, befriending, sports activities and outings, second language speakers (particularly Eastern European languages, Spanish, Portuguese, German and, occasionally, Arabic), administration support for team leaders, tutoring and/or IT skills, escorting clients to appointments (hospitals, etc), plus seasonal volunteers for the summer and at Christmas. If you have any additional skills such as complementary therapies or anything you think may be of use, please feel free to contact us.
Unfortunately, there is no wheelchair access.
At Passage House
Passage House needs volunteers between 8.00a.m. and 10.00am on weekdays and 4.30 p.m. to 7.00p.m. Monday to Sunday.. Volunteers are part of a rota system to ensure that there is cover at all times. They help with the setting up of the dining area, preparing and serving food for evening meals and light breakfasts, clearing away and tidying at the end of meals and helping out in the laundry.
Similarly to the day centre, the roles for volunteers are expanding and may include helping with sports activities at the local sports centre, help with arts and crafts groups, escorting clients on day trips and befriending clients during the evenings and weekends.
Unfortunately, there is limited access for disabled people.
Office volunteering
Our fund raising and administration is mainly carried out by volunteers lead by very few staff. If you have basic IT skills then you might fit into this team. We are particularly looking for people who have just retired and may have one or more days per week to give.
Please note
Many of the clients we see at the day centre and night shelter have mental health problems or issues with drink and drug abuse. Some volunteers in the past have had difficulties coping with this.
