Chaplaincy:

We employ two full-time chaplains, a Catholic priest and a Daughter of Charity, who are assisted by two volunteer part-time chaplains, also a priest and a religious sister. In aiming to meet the spiritual and religious needs of homeless people at the Day Centre, Passage House and Montfort House, they are sensitive to everyone’s needs and refer those of different faiths elsewhere if appropriate.

The chaplains visit and support clients in hospital, in prison and, sometimes, in detox centres, as well as those living in the community. They also lead occasional outings to church communities outside the city, pilgrimages to monasteries, churches and religious sites, and visits to art galleries and music events. When clients die, the chaplains ensure that, where possible, links are made with the clients’ families and that funeral services appropriate to their beliefs are arranged.

The chaplains aim to be a prophetic presence at The Passage – a reminder that the organisation takes its inspiration from the gospel of Jesus Christ and the way of St Vincent de Paul. Their service is, however, one of presence and friendship, not of proselytising. They attempt to be available at each location and to share meals and conversations with clients.

The Passage’s tenth fund raising concert ‘a night under the stars’ will be held in the Royal Festival Hall on Thursday 7 October 2010. The 2009 concert raised the magnificent sum of £80,000.
