How we help
The Passage continues to work mainly with rough sleepers. We are committed to helping homeless people to change their lives through the services we provide. We meet basic needs and offer advice. We help with resettlement and rehabilitation, including help with housing, literacy and numeracy, mental and physical health.
In 2008 one of our clients Nathan spoke about the help we had given him at the end of the ‘a night under the stars concert’. Click here to view video.
The services we provide
We meet basic needs
This is done by offering: hot breakfast and lunch, showers, laundry, clothing, a quiet room, hairdressing, GPs, mental care, a mental health team, podiatrist, optician, pastoral care, befriending and advising on: night shelters, hostels, benefits, identification documents, form filling, debt counselling, entitlements, finding appropriate help.
Resettlement and rehabilitation
A process which often is long and slow and involves many fresh starts. It can include the following stages:
Housing
Helping with establishing housing rights, referrals to local authorities, permanent and temporary accommodation, special needs housing, help in setting up home, links with specialist services, ongoing support
Education, training and employment
Basic computer training in our open learning centre, help with basic literacy and numeracy, introduction to word processing, links with adult education colleges
Mental health care
Our mental health workers, together with the joint homeless team, provide specialised care with counselling referrals to treatment centres and ongoing support;
Alcohol and drug abuse
Our specialist workers offer counselling, referrals to treatment centres, ongoing support, and outreach work to people suffering from the effects of substance abuse;
Passage House
Our hostel is open every day of the year. It provides accommodation for up to 40 people who would otherwise be sleeping rough. It works in close liaison with the Street Link team and the day centre;
Montfort House
Provides 16 self-contained flats with staff support on site for people preparing to move on to independent accommodation. Almost all the residents move here from Passage House.
Please see the links to the left for more details on our services.
Last year we spent almost £4.1 million, of which less than 7% was for management and fund raising. The rest was direct expenditure. This does not include the value of food and other donations in kind. Will you help us?
